Labor Day - Should It Be Renamed?

Stan Freberg here. Today is "Labor Day." Are we s'posed to labor more on this day? No, no - it's a day off for all of us laborers. It always comes on a Monday, so we get a three-day weekend. All right; but it's over too fast, right? [:60 SPOT BREAK]

The first Monday of September is always Labor Day, a legal holiday, but what about that word "Labor" to describe all of us? Even though I've always worked for a living, I don't like to think of myself as a "laborer." Nobody does, not even a guy digging a ditch.

"Labor Day" is such a dull-sounding name. Since the day is for all of us, how about "People's Day"? "What are you doing for the 'People's Day' weekend?"

Whatever we call it, some people still have to work today - I'm in here doing this radio commentary, aren't I? If you're lucky enough to be off, and on the road, leave plenty of room between you and the next car, and try to hold down your speed, okay?

Happy "People's Day."
