A Few Ice Cream Facts

Stan Freberg here. July was "Ice Cream Month," but you can have it in August, if you want, or December. I love it any time. Be right back. [:60 SPOT BREAK]

Freberg here. Americans eat over 1.5 billion gallons of ice cream a year. In 1997, we ate over 5 gallons per person, and that was before the horrible heat wave suffered in Texas and other Southern states in 1998. People in the South probably ate 5 gallons each a week to try and stay cool.

Ice cream was first eaten in 18th century Paris, and enjoyed here by Dolly Madison and George Washington: "Mmm...can you run those flavors by me one more time?"

But it really took off starting with the St. Louis World Fair of 1904, where the ice cream cone was first introduced.

My favorite flavor is Ben & Jerry's "Cherry Garcia," a pun on the late, great guitar player.

How about a flavor honoring space pioneer Alan Shepard: "Astro Nut"?
