STAN FREBERG HERE...

The Verse By The Side Of The Road

Stan Freberg here. If you're under 40, you probably don't remember Burma-Shave signs along the highway. Four signs that rhymed. Funny. But now they're coming back...on TV??? [:60 SPOT BREAK]

As a kid, when my dad would take us out for a drive on Sunday afternoon, I looked forward to the various red and white Burma-Shave signs. Spaced a hundred yards apart, they gave you one line at a time, like:

"Within this veil
Of toil and sin
Your head grows bald
But not your chin...
Burma-Shave."

They even worked in an occasional safety point:

"Keep well to the right
Of the oncoming car
Get your close shaves
From the half-pound jar, of...
Burma-Shave."

The end of more leisurely speeds spelled the end of Burma-Shave signs, since they couldn't put 'em on freeways. In 1964 they went bye-bye. But now they're coming back in TV commercials??? Hmm. Not the same thing.

Although it might work, it's doubtful.
