STAN FREBERG HERE...

Memorable L.A. Firsts

Stan Freberg here. New York had the first cafeteria, called the "Automat"; but L.A., where I live, had some memorable firsts, like the first drive-through bank, and the first double hamburger, from Bob's Big Boy. Be right back. [:60 SPOT BREAK]

Many East Coast people are fond of "riding" Los Angeles, where I was born, but many other things were born here, like the first gas station in the U.S.--1922; and later, the first "self-service" gas station. Also, the first freeway was built here. Hmm...considering gridlock, I don't know if we should be too proud of that.

"Barbie" was born here at Mattel; also, next time you open a fortune cookie, remember it was created not in Hong Kong, but in L.A.

Now, lest all of you East Coast "webheads" think only frivolous things came from L.A., remember the internet was born here! Professor Leonard Kleinroch of UCLA is the father of the internet, and everything.com, so there!

From L.A., this is Stan Freberg here.
