STAN FREBERG HERE...

What Did They Know?

Stan Freberg here with a few dumb comments made by various movie people over the years who should've known better. Here's Daryl Zanuck, former head of 20th Century Fox, speaking in 1946 on the subject of television: "I give it 6 months. People will soon get tired of staring at a plywood box every night." Um-hmm. Be right back. [:60 SPOT BREAK]

When the great MGM producer Irving Thalberg had a chance to make "Gone With the Wind" for MGM, he said to Louis B. Mayer, "Forget it, Louie. No Civil War movie ever made a nickel." Mayer said, "Irving knows what's right!" So the film was made by David O. Selznick Studios.

And the head of the Blue Book Modeling Agency told a young Marilyn Monroe, "Forget it, honey. You better find secretarial work, or get married."

Finally, Sam Goldwyn, upon viewing Bette Davis' screen tests, said, "Who DID this to me?"

See? It turns out nobody knows anything.
