STAN FREBERG HERE...

What's In A Nickname? (1997 Version)

Stan Freberg here on nicknames. Did anybody ever call Bob Dole "Robert"? Did anybody ever call Newt Gingrich "Newton," as in "Fig"? Be right back. [:60 SPOT BREAK]

Freberg here. How did William Jefferson Clinton become just plain "Bill"? How did President James Earl Carter, Jr. become "Jimmy"? Probably hated being called "Jr." My daughter, Donna Jr., also hates being called "Jr."

It seems every 3rd person in the South is called "Bubba," because little kids can't say the word "brother." My son-in-law, Dustin Ebsen, was soon nicknamed "Dusty." And when Dusty was little, he couldn't say his sister's name, Kirsten. "Kiki" was as close as he got.

There's a famous golfer nicknamed "Tiger," and a jazz harmonica player answering to "Toots." I always wanted a nickname, but maybe not "Doc." The writer Nelson Algren said, "Never eat at a place called 'Mom's,' never play cards with a man named 'Doc'."

Maybe I'll just settle for...Stan Freberg here.
