A Golden Practical Joke

Stan Freberg here. The new Broadway hit show, "Dream," celebrates the lyrics of my dear friend, Johnny Mercer--everything from "Moon River" to "Hooray For Hollywood." It stars the talented Lesley Ann Warren and my friend Margaret Whiting. A true story about her, after this. [:60 SPOT BREAK]

Early in her career, Margaret Whiting's hit record, "A Tree In The Meadow" sold over a million copies. She was personally handed a gold record by Capitol's head of publicity, Bud Freeman.

She said to him, "Is this my actual record under the gold?" He said, "Yes. But don't play it, or the gold will wear off." She took it home and hung it on the wall of her den.

Ten years later she was moving, and went to pack her gold record. She said to herself, "I wonder..." and put it on her record player.

Out came the voice of Bud Freeman saying, "What are you doing, Margaret? I thought I told you the gold would wear off!"

How about a practical joker willing to wait ten years for a gag to pay off?
