Nixon Has New Tapes Out? (Broadcast Version)

Stan Freberg here. Well, our old friend President Richard Nixon has a new tape out. Not sure if it'll be available on CD, but it's nice to know Mr. Nixon is now in the record business...you might say. More, in a minute. [:60 SPOT BREAK]

Freberg here. Yes, you heard me right, Richard Nixon has brought out some new tapes. That is, they're old tapes, recorded in the Oval Office back in the early 70s when he was still President.

Yes, that's right. These are the same tapes that caused such a stir when we disocvered that someone had edited out seven and a half minutes or whatever it was. Nixon always claimed he didn't know how that gap occured. Maybe the tape fairy came in the night and degaussed those minutes out.

At any rate, after 22 years of the tapes being locked up, the National Archives has now released them. Every word Richard Nixon uttered in the Oval Office from February 1971 through July '73. Not just Watergate's greatest hits (many hours of scheming and stonewalling), but the big enchilada - 63 hours of secretly recorded Nixon White House tapes! All in glorious monaural.

You can purchase a boxed set from the National Archives, but what about the video for MTV? And we've gotta get a catchy name for this boxed set...how about "Nixon and the Blowfish"? Or, if you don't like the Nixon tapes, just disconnect the tape deck.

Now you've got "Nixon Unplugged."
