Get Your Kicks on Route 666? Forget It!

(1998 Version)

Stan Freberg here. On the heels of the Roswell/UFO uproar, here comes another weird New Mexico story. There's a questionable highway running through the state--Highway 666. Whoa, too Satanic a number for ME! Also for the Navajos, who say too many accidents have occured on this ill-numbered highway. [:60 SPOT BREAK]

Talking about route 666, which links the Navajo reservation with Gallup, New Mexico. In the Navajos' traditional belief, the number 6, or any combination of it, is evil.

Hmm. As a preacher's kid, I'm not going anywhere near that highway! 666 symbolizes the "Mark of the Beast," the anti-Christ, prophesised in the Book of Revelation. Hey, even President Reagan and his wife Nancy changed the address of their California home from '666" to "668."

In the meantime, a New Mexico road engineer may have the answer: "Just turn all the signs upside-down," he said. "Then we'll have Highway 999."
