STAN FREBERG HERE...

The "Eco-President"? Well...

Stan Freberg here. Now that the President is back from his trip to Africa, I'm relieved he didn't bulldoze any rain forests. I'll explain after this. [:60 SPOT BREAK]

Freberg here. I'm sure Bill Clinton likes to think of himself as "ecology friendly," especially with Earth Day coming up. But a while back, when he visited the Braulio Carillo rain forest, his speech included the line, "We destory these resources at our own peril." He was on crutches at the time, and his staff determined that the speaking platform was too remote, and the terrain too challenging, for a President hobbling along.

Consequently, part of the rain forest actually had to be bulldozed, and a 350-foot strip of asphalt put down, to accomodate the environmentalist-in-Chief.

Explained a White House staffer, "The Costa Ricans seem to appreciate how important a 'photo op' this was for us." Hmm.

That's all from the "ecology desk."

Stan Freberg here.
