Buzz Aldrin--First Man On The Moon? (1997 version)

Stan Freberg here. My friend Buzz Aldrin, the astronaut, has sort of intimated to me over the years that he regrets not being the very first man on the moon. More, after this. [:60 SPOT BREAK]

Freberg here. On the historical flight Apollo 11, Buzz Aldrin, not Neil Armstrong, might've been the first man out on the moon. I often talk with my friend Buzz. As a member of the Apollo 11 crew, Buzz's place in history is secure. But still, I think he wishes...

Well, here's the scene as I imagine it. Neil and Buzz are in the hatch of the Eagle, about to step out on the moon. Neil says, "Go ahead, Buzz, after you." Buzz says, No, no, Neil, you go first." Neil said, "Really? Doesn't make any difference to me." Buzz said, "No, go ahead, Neil."

And so, Walter Cronkite said, "Somebody is coming down the steps now, it's...it's Neil Armstrong, first man on the moon!"

I say, "If you ever do this again, say, on Mars, Buzz, don't be so polite."
