STAN FREBERG HERE...

A Golden Practical Joke
(Revised version)

Stan Freberg here. The Broadway show "Dream" celebrated the songs of my dear friend Johnny Mercer. Everything from "Moon River" to "That's Entertainment." It starred Lesley Ann Warren and my friend Margaret Whiting. A true, funny story about her, after this. [:60 SPOT BREAK]

Freberg again. Early in her career, Margaret Whiting's hit record "A Tree In The Meadow" sold over a million copies. She was personally handed a gold record by Capitol's publicity man, Bud Freeman.

She said to him, "Uh, is this my actual record under the gold?" He said, "Yes it is, but don't play it, or the gold will wear off." She took it home and hung it on the wall.

Ten years later, she said to herself, "I wonder..." and put it on her record player. Out came the voice of Bud Freeman saying, "What are you doing, Margaret? I thought I told you the gold would wear off!"

How about a practical joker willing to wait 10 years for a gag to pay off?
